Rug Care + Washing Guide

Our washable cotton rugs are made for real family life. Muddy feet, snack time, craft sessions and everyday spills are all part of the adventure. With a little care, your rug will stay looking beautiful for years to come.

Everyday Care

• Vacuum regularly using suction only or a soft floor setting.
• Avoid rotating brush heads, especially when your rug is new, as they can pull at the cotton pile.
• Rotate your rug every few months to encourage even wear.
• We recommend using a rug underlay to help prevent movement and add extra cushioning.

Spot Cleaning

Spills happen. The sooner you get to them, the better.

• Blot spills with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub.
• Spot clean with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent if needed.
• Allow the area to dry completely before placing furniture back on the rug.

Machine Washing

Our smaller rugs can be washed at home in a washing machine with a minimum 8 kg capacity:

• 140 × 200 cm
• 160 × 230 cm
• 150 cm Round

If your washing machine is smaller than 8 kg, we recommend using a local laundromat with a larger commercial machine.

To wash your rug:

• Wash separately on a cold, gentle cycle.
• Use a small amount of mild detergent.
• Do not bleach.
• Do not use fabric softener.
Remove your rug from the washing machine as soon as the cycle finishes. Leaving a wet rug sitting in the machine may cause colours to bleed.

Larger Rugs

Our larger rugs can absolutely be washed too. We recommend using a commercial laundromat or professional rug cleaner simply because larger rugs become very heavy when wet and may be too much for a standard household washing machine.

Drying

Our rugs can be tumble dried on a low heat setting. This can help fluff the cotton pile back up and keep your rug feeling beautifully soft.

Larger rugs should be line dried or dried according to your professional cleaner's recommendations.

Always make sure your rug is completely dry before putting it back in place.

A Note on Stains

Our rugs are made from natural cotton fibres and are not treated with stain resistant chemicals. Instead, they're designed to be washed when family life gets messy.

Most everyday spills can be spot cleaned, while a full wash every now and then will help keep your rug looking fresh.

Fluff & Shedding

Don't be alarmed by the fluff. It's normal.

Because our rugs are made from natural cotton, some loose fibres and shedding are completely normal, particularly during the first few weeks.

You may even notice quite a lot of cotton fluff collecting in your vacuum cleaner at first. Don't worry. This does not mean your rug is falling apart. These are loose fibres from the handmade production process and the shedding will gradually reduce with regular vacuuming and use.

A lint or fluff remover can also be used to pick up any loose fibres sitting on the surface.

Beautifully Handmade

Every Hunter and Nomad rug is handcrafted from natural cotton, so slight variations in colour, texture and pile are part of what makes each one unique.

Your rug was made to be lived on, played on and loved for years to come.
