H+N Reno Diaries: Inside Jack's LEGO-inspired room

H+N Reno Diaries: Inside Jack's LEGO-inspired room

When it came time to give Jack's room a full makeover, I knew I wanted something fun, colourful and totally him. Jack has always loved LEGO, and I wanted to create a space that felt playful, full of personality, and still practical for everyday life.

I'm a big believer in using colour and making bold choices, but in ways that aren’t too permanent, so they can evolve as our kids grow. That’s exactly what I did in this space. Most of the changes are easy to update, swap out or move around. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about creating a space that feels good for your family.

Before I started on the room itself, I created a mood board to get a feel for the direction I wanted to take. I always find mood boarding such a helpful way to visualise a space and get excited about the process. It sets the tone and helps me figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Originally, I had styled the space with our mustard striped rug, which I love on its own, but in this room, it just didn’t quite look right, so I swapped it for the mustard checker rug and it completely changed the vibe. It brought in the perfect punch of fun and colour that tied the whole LEGO look together.

LEGO fun on the walls To bring in that LEGO magic, I added:

  • LEGO Block Wall Decals from @blond.noirsuper easy to apply and remove, and they make a huge impact.

  • LEGO-Inspired Prints from @myhiddenforest - they tie the colours together and add a creative touch.

Making daily routine a bit easier Jack definitely is always super distracted and forgets his daily morning tasks like brushing his teeth sometimes, so structure really helps. @secondscout's routine helper and little agenda weekly planner have been amazing for helping him stay on track in the mornings.

Storage that look good too Storage was a big one, the IKEA’s TROFAST system got a fun refresh with vinyl fronts from @toddleandplay, which totally lifted the look.

And I couldn’t go past the locker and wall shelves from @mustardmade which are perfect for storing LEGO builds and making the most of wall space.

Adding colour in creative ways Instead of painting the whole room, I went for a half wall in a gorgeous sky blue colour. It really adds depth without overwhelming the space. The bed wall lights from IKEA were spray painted in golden yellow spray paint, and even the stool got a new look with the British Paint - Kara Sea colour. Small changes, big impact.

Soft layers for a super cosy bed

Mixing and matching these pieces kept it feeling relaxed, colourful and not too matchy-matchy.

The little details that add character

These small touches really help the space feel layered and thoughtful without going over the top. I loved putting this room together for Jack. It’s a reminder that bold is cool, and you don’t have to play it safe with kids' rooms. Everything we did is easy to change down the track, nothing is too permanent.

Let this be your permission slip to mix it up, use colour, and create a space that feels like them, whatever their interests are right now!
